December 15, 2018

Davenport University took on Robert Morris University at home on Friday. It was a high scoring game with lots of excitement for both ends of the rink. The game stated off strong when RMU’s Donchez (Schultz) scored the game opener just over 30-seconds into the 1st. RMU held the lead for about 6 minutes until Davenport’s Ellis netted one from Piowman tying the game at 1. Davenport struck again to take the lead when Pippin scored with assists from Ballestero and Forrest. This goal would prove to be the last scored in the 1st period. The 2nd period Started off with a bang as well when RMU tied the game once again with another goal from Donachez (Anderson). Just over a minute later, RMU took the lead for the first time when Schultz scored an unassisted goal. The scoring remained quiet for what seemed like forever until 13:44 into the period when RMU scored again with another unassisted goal from Urban. Not long after, Sherman added another goal to the total making the score 5-2 to end the period. Donchez scored her hat-trick (unassisted) half-way through the 3rd period to take the commanding lead of 6-2 for her RMU teammates. A few minutes later Davenport seemed to catch a spark when Ballestero scored with helpers from Ellis and Kunz to cut down the RMU lead to just 3. However, RMU wasn’t having it when Donchez (Schultz, Anderson) scored her fourth of the game less than a minute later to maintain their 4-goal lead. Another goal was netted by RMU’s Urban (Arias) less than a minute later to make the score 8-3 with just over 5 minutes left in the game. Davenport never lost hope as proof when Forrest scored an unassisted goal in attempt to cut the lead down. However, the effort wasn’t enough when the final goal of the game was scored by RMU’s Sherman (Cardew, Arias) to finalize the score of 9-4 in favor of the Eagles.

Sunday’s game showed two completely different hockey teams and a radically different outcome. The scoring started at 7:34 into the game with a goal from Davenport’s Rudberg (Dubuc, Mulligan) initiated the change of the scoreboard. RMU failed to answer back, but at 15:43 Davenport struck again to make the score 2-0 when Forrest scored with help from Ellis and Mulligan. These 2 points would be all that was scored for the first period. The 2nd period was a slow one as well with only 1-point scored. The point came again from the home team to take the lead to 3. The goal was scored by Ballestero, unassisted. The 3rd period started slow again, with scoring not starting until half way through the period. At 10:59, RMU’s Nurse (Donchez) scored to open up the scorebooks for her team. 5 minutes later Schultz scored with the assist from St. Jean to bring the score to a manageable 3-2 in favor of Davenport. That score remained intact for less than 30 seconds before Davenport put the nail in the coffin with a goal from Dubuc and a helper from Pippin. Davenport’s net-minder Gaynor stood on her head with 34 saves to allow her team to win the game despite having only put 21 shots on the RMU goaltenders. Final score, RMU 2, Davenport 4.
